Karr competes in 4-H Market Lamb Show at Iowa State Fair

Hunter Gerths of Albia won Grand Champion Market Lamb honors in 4-H Market and Performance Lamb show on Monday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Gerths' lamb was first named Division 4 Champion. In addition, Gerths's Division 3 Champion lamb received Third Honorable Mention. Brooke Kuesel of Victor exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb, which stood second in the Division 4 Championship to Gerths's lamb.

Wine Makers Go Glass-to-Glass in State Fair Wine Competition

  Iowa wine makers put their best glasses forward in the wine portion of the Amateur Oenology competition judged Saturday, July 28, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Nomination Deadline is November 9 The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service has released 2013 nomination materials for the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame - the most prestigious state-level honor volunteers can receive.  The people selected are those who have forever changed their community, the state, the nation or the world with their volunteer service and action.

Dairy Farms Compete in State Fair Brown Swiss Show

Top dairies competed for honors in the Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle show judged Saturday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Kruses Swiss Farm of Earlville showed the Grand Champion Female. The Reserve Champion Female belonged to Onword Swiss of Oelwein. The dairy also earned second place in both the Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor contests. Lee-Anns Swiss of DeWitt collected top honors in the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.

Dairy Exhibitors Earn Honors in Iowa State Fair Jersey Competition

Dairies competed for top honors in the Jersey Dairy Cattle show judged Saturday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. David Koss of Epworth exhibited the Grand Champion Female. The Reserve Grand Champion female was shown by Steinridge Jerseys of Lawler. Lyon Jerseys, LLC, of Toledo took first place in both the Premier Exhibitor and Premier Breeder contests.

Class 19 NCCC Team Leaders Serve on First Service Project

  By: Class 19 Team Leaders                 On Monday, August 13, the newly formed Spruce, Pine and Hickory NCCC Units departed for their Team Leader training project at Pilgrim Heights Camp and Retreat Center in Montour, Iowa.  The 21 Team Leaders are assisting the camp with renovation of four cabins, construction of bunk beds and removal of invasive species.

Competitors Buzzing about Blue Ribbons in State Fair Competition

People were buzzing around the Apiary competition which was judged prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Awards and ribbons were handed out in 24 different categories of competition, ranging from beehives to beeswax candle making. Entries will be on display throughout the Fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the John Deere Agriculture Building sponsored by Alliant Energy.
